The shade helped keep the eyes free from snow and rain, as well as preventing the helmet from sliding down in front of the eyes when driving off-road in jeeps. The casual and 'unmilitary' look made the Jeep Cap unpopular with generals such as Patton, and it was eventually phased out at the end of the war.
