Bråtens Defence Socks in Norwegian Wool
Bråtens Defence Socks are ankle-high, coarse-knit wool socks made from Norwegian lambswool that has been pre-shrunk to maintain fit. Each size has its own unique colour marking at the top edge, making it easy to match pairs after washing. The model is well suited for use with hiking boots, work boots, rubber boots, and for extended outdoor activity in cold weather. The sock was originally developed for the Norwegian Armed Forces and is still used by units in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, as well as by the Sirius Patrol in Greenland. Bråtens has produced wool garments for over 60 years, and the defence sock remains one of the classic models in their collection. The wool comes from the sheep breed “Sauen,” an ancient Nordic breed introduced to Norway about 5000 years ago. It is characterised by a dense winter coat with long guard hairs and fine underwool, where fibre thickness ranges from 35 microns down to 9 microns in lambswool. For comparison, merino wool typically measures around 19 microns. The combination of coarse and fine fibres provides warmth, durability, and comfort, making these socks particularly suited for demanding conditions.Color codes:
