Rothco Classic MA-1 Bomber Jacket

Padded pilot jacket, produced by American Rothco. The MA-1 pilot jacket is a lined waist-length jacket that is well suited for winter and transitional seasons. The jacket has a strong nylon outer layer that is windproof and water-repellent. The jacket has 2 inner pockets and 2 slash pockets with flaps, as well as a sleeve pocket. The zipper is on the opposite side than usual, as the jacket is of American origin. The jacket is produced by American Rothco, a family-owned company with more than 60 years of experience in army clothing and the largest manufacturer of military clothing for civilians in the US. The history of the MA-1 jacket The MA-1 pilot jacket was developed shortly after World War II when the jet airplane was invented. The jet could fly at higher altitudes than the old propeller planes. The cold extreme altitudes meant that the old lambskin pilot jackets were no longer warm enough. The pilot needed a jacket that was warm and lightweight so that his movements were not hindered in the cramped cockpit. The MA-1 pilot jacket was produced with an olive green outer layer and orange inner lining. So if the pilot was shot down, he could hide from the enemy and make himself easy to spot for friendly forces.
