Rothco M-51 Engineers Field Bag

The M-51 Engineers Field Bag is a classic shoulder bag originating from the U.S. military in the early 1950s. It was originally developed for engineer troops and officers who needed a practical bag for maps, documents, and smaller gear. Today, it remains a recognizable piece of army-inspired equipment valued for its functionality and durable construction.

Material and construction

The bag is made from heavy-duty cotton canvas, a material Rothco is especially known for. Canvas is naturally durable and water-resistant, and with proper care the bag can last for many years. The M-51 has a compact design of approx. 30 x 35.5 x 15 cm, offering a capacity of about 15 liters.

Compartments and features

The bag is equipped with a large main section under a flap with a metal turn-lock closure. Inside and outside you’ll find several practical compartments:

• Large main compartment (approx. 27 x 27 cm)
• Plastic document pocket under the flap
• Rear zipper opening with access to organizer pockets
• Two side pockets with hook-and-loop closure and mesh reinforcement
• Several small pockets for phone, keys and 5 pen holders

The bag can be carried by the top handle or with the adjustable shoulder strap, which extends up to 150 cm.

Care instructions

To extend its lifespan, it is recommended to treat the canvas with wax or water-repellent spray, enhancing its resistance to water and dirt. Clean with a damp cloth and avoid machine washing. Always let the bag dry naturally away from direct heat sources.
